Brahmi vs Bhringraj: Which Hair Herb Is Right for You?

ByDr. Hashani Perera, BAMS·May 30, 2026

Brahmi and Bhringraj are the two most prized herbs in Ayurvedic hair care, but they solve different problems: Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) calms the nervous system and is best for stress-driven hair fall and a restless mind, while Bhringraj (Eclipta alba) is the classic herb for stimulating new growth, darkening hair and slowing greying. Most quality formulas — including ours — use both, because they work better together than alone. Here's how to tell which one your hair actually needs.

People often use the names interchangeably. They are not interchangeable. Choosing based on your real concern is the difference between a hair oil that works and one that disappoints.

Brahmi (Bacopa monnieri) — the calming herb

Brahmi is classified in Ayurveda as a *medhya rasayana* — a herb that nourishes the mind and nervous system. Its relevance to hair is indirect but powerful: a huge amount of modern hair fall is stress-driven, and Brahmi works at the root of that. By calming an overactive nervous system, it addresses the cortisol-and-tension pattern that pushes hair into early shedding.

Choose Brahmi-led care if: your hair fall worsens during stressful periods, you have a busy or anxious mind, your hair is thin and dry, or you struggle with sleep. It suits Vata constitutions especially.

Bhringraj (Eclipta alba) — the growth herb

Bhringraj is called *kesharaja* — "king of hair." It is the herb traditionally reached for to stimulate new growth, thicken the hair shaft, and slow premature greying. Where Brahmi calms, Bhringraj activates the follicle directly. It increases circulation to the scalp and is the classic choice for visible density and darkness.

Choose Bhringraj-led care if: your main goal is regrowth and thickness, you have noticeable thinning or bald patches, or you want to slow early greying.

Why the best oils use both

If hair fall is stress-driven (the most common pattern), you need *both*: Bhringraj to push regrowth at the follicle, and Brahmi to switch off the stress signal that caused the shedding in the first place. Treating only one side is why single-herb products plateau.

This is exactly why our Brahmi Hair Ritual Oil is formulated with both Brahmi and Bhringraj, in a base of cold-pressed coconut oil with Amla, Gotukola and Hibiscus — addressing the cause and the symptom in one ritual. For stress-driven fall, pairing it with Ashwagandha (which lowers cortisol internally) completes the picture.
